Insurance Information

Will my insurance cover the cost of my R.A. Fischer Iontophoresis device?

Tapwater Iontophoresis is a recognized medical therapy for treatment and control of primary hyperhidrosis and Fischer Iontophoresis Units are registered with FDA as prescription medical devices. Many healthcare plans consider this treatment as a medical necessity but some do not, so you may wish to contact your provider for pre-authorization if in doubt.

Sweatless Hands by the R.A. Fischer Company does not bill health insurance companies; patients purchase the device and then seek reimbursement from their health plan.

Your insurance company may require one or more of the following codes to process a claim:

  • CPT Code: 97033 (refers to treatments done in office)
  • ICD-9 Code: 705.21
  • HCPCS or HIC/PIC Code: E1399 "Tapwater Iontophoresis"
  • FDA Classification Code: 89KTB Iontophoresis, specific use
  • FDA 510k Number: K964208 (MD-1a) / K895365 (MD-2)
  • FEIN Number (A.R. Hinkel Co. dba R.A. Fischer Co.): 95-4063106

For many people, their treatment of Hyperhidrosis is a “medical necessity”

The International Hyperhidrosis Society has a sample “Letter of Medical Necessity” found here. We recommend that you forward this to your prescribing doctor, if you’d like to seek reimbursement for the cost of your unit.

In addition, to find out if your health insurance provider may or may not cover your treatment, the International Hyperhidrosis Society also has a great resource of health insurance policies located here.
